I’ve been following your amazing and slightly mysterious adventure on TV. Worthy of a Twilight Zone episode. I’m very impressed, you did a good thing - very righteous! I hope I can build my business up enough so I can help sponsor the 2nd attempt next year. You guys deserve it.
Well done chaps!! What you guys did to rescue that pilot and save his life was really special and I’m very proud to be British right now! I’m sorry to hear you haven’t had contact with the pilot but if ever I’m in trouble in the sea I can only hope the four of you would be rowing close by!! I’d like to say thank you for saving a life - maybe the pilot is behind with his paperwork and hasn’t had time to thank you himself!
I agree wtih Andrew Castle from GMTV when he said you are all lovely looking boys - bit worrying coming from Andrew!! I’m under 40 and still got all my teeth so I know what I’m talking about…especially you Oli!!
Hi Guys,
Well done for rescuing that pilot while trying to break the record. Sometimes being a winner isn’t about records it’s also about personal values. Really super to see. Good luck for next time.
Kind regard
Robyn (lincoln)
Saw you on Breakfast TV this morning and wanted to congratulate you on going to the aid of the downed pilot. I hope the publicity does good things for you and your cause. Good luck in your attempt to row around Britain. Keep safe and hope you raise loads for Orchid.
Pat
To Robert -
I am a friend of your father and he told me about your wonderful plan - so what you do right now is also tracked down on the continent (Germany). My deep respect for all of you and my best wishes that you arrive safely and fulfil your mission!
Best regards
Alexander
Congratulations on your ‘lifeboat’ attempt -hope the rest of the record attempt goes without incident. Might get a chance to sail out and see you as you past the Yorkshire coast.
Cheers
Ian
Your rescue made the news in Australia…Could not believe I was looking at Nick’s face on the news over here!
Well done guys - terrific effort from you all.
Just watched the early morning news and was amazed. What a lucky rescue for Mr. O’Shaughnessy. Well done to you for spotting him and reacting so quickly. well done again for trying to raise funds the way you are and being such a good example to young people.. I would like to make a small donation and wish you all the best. I’m sure you can do it!
Awesome effort, guys. Great publicity stunt with the aeroplane - just kidding! Really sorry that you won’t be able to set a record - it doesn’t seem fair, but I hope you are able to complete the challenge anyway. Keep up the spirits!
If one (or all!) of you would like to come and inspire some other young people by talking about your adventure, please let me know when you’re back. We run a residential course to motivate 14-18 year olds. Check out our website.
Great rescue call guys! Mr O’Shaughnessy was very lucky to have you around.. a big well-done from our team to yours.. I hope you are enjoying a few days of deserved rest… a perhaps a small pint of Guinness!
hi guys…doing a great job. and i’m sure the pilot you helped is very grateful that you happened to be doing this challenge.
we are a group of 12 rowers, men and women, from gravesend and medway towns rowing clubs…and we are entering a race from london to paris (westminster to the eifel tower…a distance of 450 miles non-stop over 5 days…in may 2010…!!!
we are finding it hard to gain sponsorship…and we are coming up with different events to raise money for our charities and the entrance fee for the race.
we are writing to you to see if you would be able to help us gain some sponsorship…???…or could help in any way. a good bit of media coverage would help us hugely i’m sure.
one of the ideas we have is to market ourselves as the quickest rowing couriers to paris…so if you had a package that you would like transported to the eifel tower in may 2010…or you think you could help in any way…then please contact us.
if you require any more information…please feel free to contact us.
if you have any suggestions as to sponsorship/media etc…or anything you could think that might help…we would be very grateful.
Well done lads, thanks for helping the aircraft pilot. I bet he didn`t believe his luck when he saw you all in the IRISH SEA. Good luck to you all. Charles
Wow!Well done guys, just seen u o tv,u all deserve a medal and hope the pilot does buy u a few pints and some!
Pity bout the record but your all young and fit enough 2 do it again, wot u did is worth far more.
Wud like to bung u a few quid if u let me have a postal address as a cancer surviver, wont be much im afraid, but feel the need as uv all been brill.
now about that hat………where did he get it???
big hugs
Ang xx
Nice job with being so alert and aware of your surroundings, despite being in the middle of nowhere! I fly light aircraft and know for sure that the pilot would have been bricking himself. Then to see you guys rowing towards him, amazing feeling for him.
Money aside you`ve given great coverage to your charity, not to mention British Gas too. Will be making a donation to Orchid.
Well done, be proud and continue with your voyage.
Hi there, just seen you all on GMTV, what wonderful personalities you all are, great fun and spiriit! I wish you all well! If you ever fancy coming to a school, we have just launched an indoor row club and you vivacious personalities could inspire great enthusiasm into the club! I am a gym instructor at Emerson Park School Havering Essex, just inside the M25. Perhaps our first charity row could go to your charity, what a story !!!And I would love to meet you too! 07739803269
Hey Guys…..Just seen you on Gmtv, you guys Rock!! How amazing was that…..you must be very proud of yourselves!!
You all came across really well on the tv…so if Rowing doesn’t quite work out…I’m sure there’s a few “Housewives” that would be happy to see more of you haha!!
Anyway all the best with the rest of the task…..good look guys xx
Just saw you on GMTV, well done guys, hope your next attempt meets better winds and tide. Oli, If you’re ever down the south east and fancy a beer, give us a shout!
Hey guys just saw the news report on GMTV well done to all of you and like the hat! will ensure a donaton goes to support the charity.
Regards and may all your blisters be small ones!
Lads the nation, like me, have probably just watched GMTV and been proud to hear about your efforts to fundraise and also giving up on your world record to save a man’s life. I think your story lifts us all in so many ways when all we see and hear is how GB is going to the dogs, to do such a physically exhausting challenge to help others is inspiring.. I have lost several close people to cancer in the last three years so please accept my donation in memory of them. Keep going and enjoy your home cooked food when it arrives!! So a huge “very well done” I hope you make it to £1million!
Good luck lads, saw the footage of the rescue at sea, well done. I am hoping to do the Woodvale Atlantic Race in 2011, so i know how much work you must have done, just to get the project off the ground (or should i say out to sea).
Gods Speed,
Lee Roger
Great story! Amazing you were so close to the action, I hope it get you lost of press for the your chosen charity, guys keep rowing and keep going! I believe you will make it round. You are not too fare of the record, 100mils or so… good luck and will keep watching watching with interest..
Guys, I am sure the decision is right; you have performed amazingly and deserve praise for all you have done, and shown you were capable of doing when given favourable conditions. Broken euipment is always a bummer, but you have had other trauma with which to cope. Recommend a large whisky (without an “e”) rather than counselling, but only Irish variety may be available at destination port! Rob you may yet be able to see your sister off to Canada for her adventure. Relief and love from us both, A & n
I hope everything is as good as can be on the boat guys. Everyone is so so proud of you, you have done tremendously well to even reach this far. You are an inspiration to many.
Hi Nick and the lasds with you, you are doing a great job, nothing but praise for the challenge you have all taken on. You obviously know why you are hugging the Southern Irish coastline, at this point, just wondering how long you expect the metal Coat hanger will hold up to constant pressure, in lieu of lost oar lock fittings. amd unable to go a ashore to have it fixed properly.
Can only wish you all good luck, You must all have some exiting stories to tell, when you safely arrive back on dry land. I read from your web site twice daily.
, Just cant help wondering about the strength of a flimsy metal coat hanger, locking the constantly used oars in place,?but I am only imagining how it is fitted to keep you brave guys going, Need is the mother of invention, I have all the confidence in you all. Good luck , and know you can still make it.
Hi Guys, well talk about making a drama from an exercise! Well done and may it succeed in publicity for your main purpose. You seamen may have some real stories to tell now, not merely of blisters and sore b*ms. If you get any closer to that coast you will smell the Murphys and Guiness. We remain immensely proud of you and send you lots of love. A & d
Friend of Jane O’Gorman’s who saw you all off and sprinted to Samphire Hoe to wave, but you would not have seen us! You are doing brilliantly, follow u daily and we are all urging you home asap. Hope that the luck of the Irish is with you and that the coathangers work well. Belated Happy Birthady to Will, hope he changed his boxers for the occasion! Any of u cricket fans? 4th Test a disaster - let’s hope for better for the 5th, Federer’s wife had twin girls - one called Sharlene, can u believe it? Take great care we are all with you. Dix
Keep at it lads, I hear you are low on power but as long as you can pump water you are fine. Oli - if you need some pointers about how to get the most from the boats power systems I am sure either Ray or I could help - available on the usual numbers …
But great effort all around and hope the coat hangar holds true !!
Hello Oli, Ray here. I’ve tried calling you back since this mornings chat but as usual with Sats cant get thru……. How’s it going now? Manage to get any more Volts into the batterys? Remember not to get tempted to turn anything essential on until at least 12.3 Volts as you will only be doing further damage.
Best of luk, call if you need anything more, I hope they come back for you and remember that there is always a plan B. You can hand pump water and navigate by land and skies, finishing is your primary goal….records always come second.
Luk to lads, Ray 00 353 86 2667188
Keep the spirit up lads, whats an oar amongst men! Give my sister a wave as you pass Wexford will you please. My sons dad died of cancer in June this year 2 days before his 52 birthday, I think what you are doing is incredible. Good luck.
Nick you can thank your dad for telling me about this challenge as he is my boss!
Guys you are doing really well! keep your heads up and focus on why you are doing this amazing challenge…. for all those who have suffered from Cancer…you are bringing great awareness to an awesome charity. Keep fighting.. and keep going… one day at a time one mile at a time and you will make it round…
Nine days at sea in all weathers from Dover, around Lands End and not too far from
Southern Ireland , living on dehydrated food , blisters , tiredness , heat, cold , rain etc -
whether you beat the World record or not a magnificent achievement and something to
be really proud of. Very best wishes for the remainder of you adventure. Jon ( Nicks dad ) and Annie.
hi lads great going ………. maybe the tanker thought you were somalian pirates cunningly disguised as 4 creamy white university graduates ;-))
keep up the good work best wishes
Asil
HAPPY 19th BIRTHDAY FOR TODAY WILL!!! Continuing your tradition for having your birthday in unusual places, your situation in the Irish sea just about tops the lot. I dread to think what dangerous place you will want your next birthday! Hope you will award yourself an extra wet wipe as a birthday treat - though be wary of donations of spare ones from other guys - insist on a fresh one from ’stock’. We will all look forward to a delayed birthday celebration on land. We miss you terribly and love you so much. We’re immensely proud and terrified at the same time. All our love mum and dad
Hi Guys - well!! What progress you have made! 90 miles in the 24 hour period ending 11.38am this morning!! Amazing!! Keep eating those bags of calories to keep your strength up! You will need it as time goes on! We will have all your favourite foods waiting for you when you get home! Can’t wait! Lots of love to you all, Susie, Mark and Holly x x x x
Guys great work, you are picking up speed and by my calculations, are only 29miles off our time After a hard south coast.. I hope you get blown up north.. remember what i said about the coast line on the way back down..
Hi Guys, You are halfway to Wexford from L’sE as I write - I hope not rolling too much but appear powering along - what a day of progress! If continues as @ present best yet by a margin. Glad to know you still alive Rob; saw Juliet H’s photo and u smiling - bet it’s even bigger now. Lots of love & best wishes from Angie and from me d
It was terrific to get out to see you on Friday evening, relatively calm sea and the sun was shining. The memory of our 50 mile round trip from St Mawes to get to you will be unforgettable. We all had to peel our hands off the handles of the speed boat on our return. Good to see you cheerful and ‘ok’. Everyone amazed at your courage and fortitude.
You are all amazing.
Love Juliet (will’s mum)
Hi guys, just back from camping on the norfolk coast so just heard the news. Great challenge and it keeps Oli out of trouble again. Hear you might need supplies by the time you hit the norfolk coast. Am away in Tenerife until 23rd, but back just in time to hopefully blast out on the jet ski as your passing Sea Palling!
Catcfhing up all the news with Barnwell on monday!
Great to see that your second attempt is going so well. Although sad to see Gough isn’t with you we wish your new crew member Oli all the best. We have been tracking you morning and evening every day. Good luck rounding Lands End tomorrow and keep up the hard work. All our Luv Mummy Revill & Phil
… and to think I ‘retired’ from Thames Rowing Club because I couldn’t find enough time to row AND study! What a wimp I was! You guys are just fantastic and a great example to Britain’s youth. Such determination to get back out there and try again. Well done, lads. You’ll soon be round Land’s End - possibly victualled by the Harrison-Halls on the way, it seems - and then you’ll wonder what the fuss was about. (Well, until you see the Ullapool/Stornaway ferry and remember what’s round the next corner!) Keep it up; you’re an inspiration to us all - even if you mothers are still not sleeping well!
You know there will be as much home cooked food as you can possibly eat when you get home!!!! Hazes 12th birthday today and she is enjoying a pigs ear in the rare sunshine today!! (For those of you reading this who don’t know, Haze is one of our beloved dogs!!! Pigs ears NOT on the family menu!!) Keep safe and strong - Love to you all x x x x
Don’t worry about the home cooked food lads. I’m sure you know that the mum’s can’t wait to prepare a banquet for your return! Just get round that corner and start using those winds. Love to y’all.
Go, Grandpa! Go! Hope you can keep those youngsters in line!
May the wind be and sea conditions be favourable all the way!
Safe and speedy journey, boys!!!
Lots of love,
Vicki & Finlay xxx
Good morning Guys, Just seen the Inshore waters f’cast for Lyme to LE - I guess you’ve had a choppy night and feel wind on back of head when rowing is a given for this trip; it will change! At least the sun is shining and should for a while. You have the power and the (W)ill to do it - SO get to it and round the big corner! We love you all and following Oli’s multiple tweets - I notice someone said too many makes a twat - but keep them going if only for our amusement please, and the blog keeps us up to speed also. Lots of love, A &d
Heard “boom boom pow” on the way home , Nick , and it made me think of you ! Bet you’re all singing along to it on the boat.
Hope all is going well. Keep at it, you’re doing well.
Lots of love, Holly
xxx
Good work team - you boys are flying. I hope that Oli “the old man of the boat” Dudley is managing to keep pace with the youngsters! Best of luck and break that WR! Cheers Tom Barnes & Rich Hume
Ol,
Go man go, row man row.
Hope the hands and bums are shaping up and pleasantly blistered.
Looks like you have another record in the bag, keep it going old man.
PJ
Well done boys - keep it up! We are sailing on Gaivota around Falmouth at the moment and will try to come out to see you when you pass by - probably Friday or Saturday I guess. Weather not looking too bad here at the moment - due to move into the North West tomorrow night.
5 knots!!! Very impressive!! I knew you were all up for it as when you left Dover Harbour, we were running down the promenade to wave at the furthest point into sea, and we could not keep up with you then!!! Do hope you are all still feeling good, everyone of you - Lots of love and admiration , x x x x p.s. Have written to the Duke of Edinburgh today about you all!!!
Wow.. again Guys - you aren’t half shifting when the tide is with you - 5 knts steady in the early hours and again as I look (early afternoon), time off for breakfast was it this am, or digestion time for Will?? Remember the water is smoother for rowing when wind with tide than contra, but I guess a lot of it has been on beam. You have been doing 1 county per day- Sat, Kent; Sun E Sussex, Mon W Sussex, Tues must be Hants & I of W, and Dorset today. So it should be Devon tomorrow, Cornwall on Friday and Wexford on Saturday?? Too big an ask really - but keep the slaves at it Nick.
Hope all kit working well - it’s warming up. Love and God Speed, A & d
Have watched with enthusiam , and tracked your location twice daily, you appear to be doing great, looks like you are off the Dorset , Poole coastline as I type this.
We are all proud of you ,all 4 of you, and your challenge ahead, none of it can hopefully be worse than Hastings area. that you conquered.
Good luck, to Nick, Robie, Will and Olly, t6ake care and keep safe.
Really proud and delighted your off to a good start . Spending more time in the office
following your tracking than working at the moment !
Very best wishes and good luck to you all.
Jon ( Nicks dad ) and Annie xx
Dear Nick and the guys - Following your progress with great interest - I only wish I was your age to be with you! Best of luck for your journey, Love Rene xx (age 87)
keep going guys. am so proud of you all and it’s great to be able to see the photos off oli’s iphone. keep strong, love you xxxxx
p.s. nick i have taken full possession of your laptop whilst you are away. it is now mine. love you xxxx
We are all watching your marvellous progress and feel for you when we see that you have to slow down with the tides….hopefully this gives you all a breather though and not too much sicking into dinner!! Am busy contacting lots of press here as want to tell the world what an amazing challenge you are enduring and sure you will raise “loads of money” for your fantastic charity, Orchid. You all deserve this record and can do it! Keep well and safe!! Love you! x x x x
Hi Guys, WOWEEE you really are marching across the map now - only 6 n miles off I of Wight as I write - don’t get tempted by all the pretty girls and champagne going about that part of the world for Cowes week! Pheasant from the freezer for lunch here - just think of that - but don’t waste water by drooling. Loves from us both to you all - and the forecast is improving all the time at present. A & d
Guys, just great to have updates as everyone wondering how you are getting on. Brilliant to have the photos too - not too scary for the mummies. Awesome how you got through challenges off Hastings. Will very good at being sick into bowl/plate/hat/pouch so less mess. Everyone in St Mawes willing you to succeed. Lots of love xxxxx
Hi everyone again! For those of you watching the tracking….Woodvale have responded this morning and have been in touch with the boys and it appears that a fuse in the beacon needed replacing which they have now done and it started flashing! - At that time they were off the coast near Hastings, hence why the beacon is showing as tracking from then……….Watch this space!
HI everyone! At last, the guys managed to leave yesterday morning, from Dover, at approx 11.54am (waiting for the exact time to be confirmed from Woodvale) I have submitted some detail on it, together with pics, for the GB Row website, and it should go on “Latest News” today or tomorrow latest……
The sun was shining (Marks head got sunburnt!) and the mood was very determined and optimistic with a strong feeling of “lets get on with it!” - naturally there were a few tears from Mums (again!)
We are aware Marine Track is not showing up and are trying to contact the necessary people to get this enabled! Simon Chalk from Woodvale was there yesterday but unfortunately his mobile phone fell in the water, so do not have another mobile phone number to contact him on! ….at the latest, I will call the office at 9.00am Monday morning so please keep checking the website!
Keep watching the updates!!
Susie Bevan (Nicks Mum)
Finally! I was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen…. shame i couldn’t see you off, but i intend to be there at the finish, with beer. and bon-bons for you will!
Hi Guys, Very sad the powerhouse is not with you- so Dave thinking of you- as I bet you are thinking of them and all that training, not wasted, but you will have to use the energy a little differently! But Good luck, God Speed and fair winds to you four, including you Oli, and desperately sad not to be with you now. I had a PG stalker yesterday and this am, finishing last night at 2230 and starting this am at 0330, fortunately successfully (twice). I shall think of you all a lot, and look forward to seeing you all soon. A & d
At last! The weather forecast is good so hopefully this time it will be all systems go until you return. Good luck and God Bless you all - we admire your guts, determination and staminia, we are both very excited for you. Love from Nick’s Uncle Mike and Auntie Sandy XXXX
Sorry to hear about opinion on weather window NOT being large enough re-start in next few days - I foresee stiff breezes not gales from my reading of met maps - but they have more modelling kit and I know it was felt last night pattern could go one of 3 ways! Best wishes to all, nigel
Good luck with the second attempt from all of us here in School House - we will continue to monitor your progress and hope for better weather conditions this time round!
Hi Nick, Rob and the boys - We are all rooting for you here at British Gas. Keep up the spirits and the drinks are on us when you get back home. Nick, your mum told me you now have acquired a taste for soft drinks ?????
This little incident has just been a salient reminder to all of us back on dry land just how MAHOUSIVE this challenge is. It most definitely is NOT a walk in the park. Hopefully this has added to your experience and now you are ready and raring to go and do the business. If I could walk the coast line and cheer you all the way I would. You are all heroes to me and the kids here in Newbury. LOVE YOU ALL Debi xx
Well done Nick and lads, do not whatever happens give up, you must go back and make a second run at it asap. You have done a great job so far, all of you. Very unfortunate running into such a storm in the English Channel in the month of July. What happened was tough luck on you all, put it down to experience. Everyone is proud of your efforts to date, so never give up, after all you have put into it throughout 2009. You CAN do it and everyone is rooting for you. I have confidence in you all as a team. Love Papa (Nicks Grandad) All the best Nick, Will, David and Rob !
Guys - when I heard what had happened down in Hastings, I must admit I wasn’t sure whether it was (a) bad luck; (b) you had encountered an over-zealous cautious coastguard; or (c) you weren’t as well-prepared as we all thought. Having experienced the extraordinary weather in Central London yesterday - and heard the news this morning in which they singled out “Hastings, where overt two months worth of rain fell in the day”, I know it wasn’t the latter two reasons!!! Best of luck with the restart - hope you have more luck next time. Simon
Keep smiling and be positive. The weather is something we all find dificult at times.
How many times did Sir Edmund Hillary have to submit to the weather before he achieved his goal? Take heart from the great man who knew it is no good trying to beat the elements; but rather wait until conditions are right, then try again with all your might.
Good luck,
Mick Hutchings.
as we said to u yesterday guys - you’ve done the hard bit in all the planning and showing the spirit to do this.
if it’s safe to do it again - go for it. if notr - don’t. Remember that the sea has always been greater than man - even four young men!
I did offer to ‘tow you in to our house in Eastbourne’. offer still stands.
Mark, Suzie, just read the news report on the site about the weather and that the boys have had to give up - this is so awful I am really sorry for them, they must be so disappointed. I have only read it very quickly but understand they are going to have a second attempt very soon but what a misery for them. My very best wishes to all for the second go and sincerely hope that the weather holds this time.
Best wishes
Wendy
Keep goıng guys. you can do thıs. cant waıt to see you all when you,re back. keep strong ! love you lots ş holly xxxxxxx apologıes for the poor typıng am on a turkısh keyboard !! xxxx
Guys - sometimes s*** happens - wind on boat’s nose almost all way. Pick yourselves up, dry yourselves off, and we’ll all pray for better weather and following winds! Rob - I’ve got some self-draining shoes if that’l help. We’ll come to Tower Bridge again if possible - if you can we can. Luvs and best wishes, A & d
Lads, you guys have done so well . Saw the forecast and knew it was gonna be tough. Dont lose heart you can do it.
Everyones thinking about you out there - including me as i get into my comfy bed in hotel in bermuda!
chin up
Mark (Homer)
Wishing you lots of luck, guess you’ve been fighting against the wind all day. We live on Hastings seafront and you were just opposite our flat so we saw you moored up for the night. Hope the weather gets better for you.
Hope you are ok after your very choppy night off of Hastings East Sussex. We saw the lifeboat come out to you but hope that it was just bringing supplies.
We are all watching your tracking device (convicts?) and thinking of you. We drank your health at the Leavers’ Ball, Will and thought of you at Jack’s party last night…
Sorry to see you’ve been pinned boys. Hope it’s not too choppy on the buoy. Fingers crossed the weather will clear. We were out rowing in 25 knot headwinds last week and learnt just how futile it can be. You’ll soon be back to record chasing though I’m sure
Good luck to you all, just looked at your tracking thing and was disappointed not to actually see you on the satellite, but then I realised that would be stupid! Anyway good luck!!
I am so impressed with you guys, you are doing an amazing thing. I see these professional pictures on the website of a state of the art boat with sponsors on the side and everything, with Pickles and Bev on board and i can’t believe it! I will be checking your progress and i hope you pass close to the Wirral, cos i’ll be waving! Good on you guys, good luck and i feel proud to know you!
Hi Nick and the boys …….. i work with your Dad Mark and was hoping to be there when you cast off - i live in London - but unfortunately couldnt make it. heres wishing you all a very safe and successful journey …….. Mark tells me that you have a special transpoder thing that makes you look like a large ship or something so you dont get hit by other shipping ……… lets hope the somalian pirates dont make mistake you for a oil tanker and try to board you …… all the very best
Best of luck to you, I will be checking your progress & cheering/willing you on all the way. And of course linking everyone to your fundraising. Good luck! Sally
Good luck boys! Just remember to WEAR those lifejackets and CLIP ON the harnesses ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. Just think of all those loved ones at home worrying about you!
Wishing you the very best of luck and God Speed!
with love from all the Harrison-Halls - Giles, Liz, Izzie, Sophy & Amelia xxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks Will, we’ll probably be in touch sometime in the not so distant future! We’ll probably need your advice in certain places with regards to the tides.
Will de Lasz has just sent me through all the info about you guys trying to beat the record that we set back in 2005- can’t believe it was so long ago. I was one of the four.
I have been hoping that someone would attempt to beat it and I wish you guys the best of luck- it was a great experience although one that I probably wouldn’t want to try again!
I was the navigator so if you want to talk about anything navigation or indeed anything else please don’t hesitate to contact me and I would be more than willing to offer any assistance where possible. If you row east up into the Solent then let me know as I am often on the water and it might be a good opportunity to help you out.
No Nick, Dawson and Friggle are two extreme rowers who i met over easter, they are the most hardcore guys EVER!!! :(( I think we’ve got a challenge on our hands!!
will homer you are officially the coolest person ever i will give you all my money i love you. also… WHY DID YOU CUT OUT YOUR D OF E TEAM FROM THE PHOTOGRAPH? …x xxoxo xoxoxo xoxo xo
That sounds great, we might just take you up on that offer!! Whilst practising in the Sound, we saw quite a few gig rowers and did try to race them, just didn’t quite have the pace on them unfortunately!!
We’ll be back down in a few weeks, maybe see if we’re free for a day then for a go in a gig rower!
Thanks again, Nick
Hi I saw your boat go past my door in Landrake this morning I presume it was heading for Boating World. I am a Cornish Pilot gig rower with the Rame gig Club, Best of luck with your row around Britain. If you fancy a row around Cawsand Bay in a Gig please let me know.
You are all working so hard to achieve this wonderful event………..So very proud of my son and his friends - BUT, as a MUM, I have to say I am,obviously, sooooooo concerned deep inside!!!! Lots of love, Mum (Susie) xxxx

Congratulations on such a valiant effort, we are all very proud of you.
August 15th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I’ve been following your amazing and slightly mysterious adventure on TV. Worthy of a Twilight Zone episode. I’m very impressed, you did a good thing - very righteous! I hope I can build my business up enough so I can help sponsor the 2nd attempt next year. You guys deserve it.
August 15th, 2009 at 8:44 am
All the best boys!

Great story! I so want to know what was in that bag…
I hadn’t heard of Orchid or your challenge before the incident. I’ll be supporting both in the future.
My best wishes to you all for your next attempt (Scottish seas permitting).

Hi Guys,
Well done for rescuing that pilot while trying to break the record. Sometimes being a winner isn’t about records it’s also about personal values. Really super to see. Good luck for next time.

To Robert -
I am a friend of your father and he told me about your wonderful plan - so what you do right now is also tracked down on the continent (Germany). My deep respect for all of you and my best wishes that you arrive safely and fulfil your mission!

Well done to you for spotting him and reacting so quickly. well done again for trying to raise funds the way you are and being such a good example to young people.. Fit or what ? youve got to do a calander ! Will defo donate
August 13th, 2009 at 8:34 am
Awesome effort, guys. Great publicity stunt with the aeroplane - just kidding! Really sorry that you won’t be able to set a record - it doesn’t seem fair, but I hope you are able to complete the challenge anyway. Keep up the spirits!
If one (or all!) of you would like to come and inspire some other young people by talking about your adventure, please let me know when you’re back. We run a residential course to motivate 14-18 year olds. Check out our website.
Best wishes
David

Hello Boys!
Good luck to you all, especially Olly! Your smile lights up the world!
August 13th, 2009 at 7:56 am
hi guys…doing a great job. and i’m sure the pilot you helped is very grateful that you happened to be doing this challenge.
we are a group of 12 rowers, men and women, from gravesend and medway towns rowing clubs…and we are entering a race from london to paris (westminster to the eifel tower…a distance of 450 miles non-stop over 5 days…in may 2010…!!!
we are finding it hard to gain sponsorship…and we are coming up with different events to raise money for our charities and the entrance fee for the race.
we are writing to you to see if you would be able to help us gain some sponsorship…???…or could help in any way. a good bit of media coverage would help us hugely i’m sure.
one of the ideas we have is to market ourselves as the quickest rowing couriers to paris…so if you had a package that you would like transported to the eifel tower in may 2010…or you think you could help in any way…then please contact us.
if you require any more information…please feel free to contact us.
if you have any suggestions as to sponsorship/media etc…or anything you could think that might help…we would be very grateful.
cheers and keep rowing.

August 13th, 2009 at 7:32 am
Nice job with being so alert and aware of your surroundings, despite being in the middle of nowhere! I fly light aircraft and know for sure that the pilot would have been bricking himself. Then to see you guys rowing towards him, amazing feeling for him.
Money aside you`ve given great coverage to your charity, not to mention British Gas too. Will be making a donation to Orchid.
Well done, be proud and continue with your voyage.
Tony from Jersey.

August 13th, 2009 at 6:59 am
congratulate the 4 rowers who saved the pilot in the Irish sea they are heroes
August 13th, 2009 at 6:56 am
Lads the nation, like me, have probably just watched GMTV and been proud to hear about your efforts to fundraise and also giving up on your world record to save a man’s life. I think your story lifts us all in so many ways when all we see and hear is how GB is going to the dogs, to do such a physically exhausting challenge to help others is inspiring.. I have lost several close people to cancer in the last three years so please accept my donation in memory of them. Keep going and enjoy your home cooked food when it arrives!! So a huge “very well done” I hope you make it to £1million!
August 12th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
Good luck lads, saw the footage of the rescue at sea, well done. I am hoping to do the Woodvale Atlantic Race in 2011, so i know how much work you must have done, just to get the project off the ground (or should i say out to sea).
Gods Speed,
Lee Roger

Guys, I am sure the decision is right; you have performed amazingly and deserve praise for all you have done, and shown you were capable of doing when given favourable conditions. Broken euipment is always a bummer, but you have had other trauma with which to cope. Recommend a large whisky (without an “e”) rather than counselling, but only Irish variety may be available at destination port! Rob you may yet be able to see your sister off to Canada for her adventure. Relief and love from us both, A & n

Lots of love xxx
August 12th, 2009 at 6:51 am
Love Michael, Nick’s Grandfather.
August 11th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Hi Guys, well talk about making a drama from an exercise! Well done and may it succeed in publicity for your main purpose. You seamen may have some real stories to tell now, not merely of blisters and sore b*ms. If you get any closer to that coast you will smell the Murphys and Guiness. We remain immensely proud of you and send you lots of love. A & d
August 11th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Friend of Jane O’Gorman’s who saw you all off and sprinted to Samphire Hoe to wave, but you would not have seen us! You are doing brilliantly, follow u daily and we are all urging you home asap. Hope that the luck of the Irish is with you and that the coathangers work well. Belated Happy Birthady to Will, hope he changed his boxers for the occasion! Any of u cricket fans? 4th Test a disaster - let’s hope for better for the 5th, Federer’s wife had twin girls - one called Sharlene, can u believe it? Take great care we are all with you. Dix
August 11th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Keep at it lads, I hear you are low on power but as long as you can pump water you are fine. Oli - if you need some pointers about how to get the most from the boats power systems I am sure either Ray or I could help - available on the usual numbers …
But great effort all around and hope the coat hangar holds true !!
Very best wishes
Leven
August 11th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
PS Ol, if you need anything on Irish coast give me a buzz and I’ll try organise….
Cheers, Ray
August 11th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

August 11th, 2009 at 7:27 am
Guys you are doing really well! keep your heads up and focus on why you are doing this amazing challenge…. for all those who have suffered from Cancer…you are bringing great awareness to an awesome charity. Keep fighting.. and keep going… one day at a time one mile at a time and you will make it round…
Very best Will

Nine days at sea in all weathers from Dover, around Lands End and not too far from
Southern Ireland , living on dehydrated food , blisters , tiredness , heat, cold , rain etc -
whether you beat the World record or not a magnificent achievement and something to
be really proud of. Very best wishes for the remainder of you adventure. Jon ( Nicks dad ) and Annie.

August 9th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Hi Guys - well!! What progress you have made! 90 miles in the 24 hour period ending 11.38am this morning!! Amazing!! Keep eating those bags of calories to keep your strength up! You will need it as time goes on! We will have all your favourite foods waiting for you when you get home! Can’t wait! Lots of love to you all, Susie, Mark and Holly x x x x
August 9th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Guys great work, you are picking up speed and by my calculations, are only 29miles off our time After a hard south coast.. I hope you get blown up north.. remember what i said about the coast line on the way back down..
keep working hard and keep going..
August 9th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Hi Guys, You are halfway to Wexford from L’sE as I write - I hope not rolling too much but appear powering along - what a day of progress! If continues as @ present best yet by a margin. Glad to know you still alive Rob; saw Juliet H’s photo and u smiling - bet it’s even bigger now. Lots of love & best wishes from Angie and from me d
August 9th, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Mike

Great to see that your second attempt is going so well. Although sad to see Gough isn’t with you we wish your new crew member Oli all the best. We have been tracking you morning and evening every day. Good luck rounding Lands End tomorrow and keep up the hard work. All our Luv Mummy Revill & Phil
August 7th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
August 7th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
You know there will be as much home cooked food as you can possibly eat when you get home!!!! Hazes 12th birthday today and she is enjoying a pigs ear in the rare sunshine today!! (For those of you reading this who don’t know, Haze is one of our beloved dogs!!! Pigs ears NOT on the family menu!!) Keep safe and strong - Love to you all x x x x
August 7th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Don’t worry about the home cooked food lads. I’m sure you know that the mum’s can’t wait to prepare a banquet for your return! Just get round that corner and start using those winds. Love to y’all.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:48 am
Go, Grandpa! Go! Hope you can keep those youngsters in line!
May the wind be and sea conditions be favourable all the way!
Safe and speedy journey, boys!!!

August 7th, 2009 at 6:48 am
Good morning Guys, Just seen the Inshore waters f’cast for Lyme to LE - I guess you’ve had a choppy night and feel wind on back of head when rowing is a given for this trip; it will change! At least the sun is shining and should for a while. You have the power and the (W)ill to do it - SO get to it and round the big corner! We love you all and following Oli’s multiple tweets - I notice someone said too many makes a twat - but keep them going if only for our amusement please, and the blog keeps us up to speed also. Lots of love, A &d
August 6th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Heard “boom boom pow” on the way home , Nick , and it made me think of you ! Bet you’re all singing along to it on the boat.
Hope all is going well. Keep at it, you’re doing well.

August 5th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Well done boys - keep it up! We are sailing on Gaivota around Falmouth at the moment and will try to come out to see you when you pass by - probably Friday or Saturday I guess. Weather not looking too bad here at the moment - due to move into the North West tomorrow night.
August 5th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
August 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Wow.. again Guys - you aren’t half shifting when the tide is with you - 5 knts steady in the early hours and again as I look (early afternoon), time off for breakfast was it this am, or digestion time for Will?? Remember the water is smoother for rowing when wind with tide than contra, but I guess a lot of it has been on beam. You have been doing 1 county per day- Sat, Kent; Sun E Sussex, Mon W Sussex, Tues must be Hants & I of W, and Dorset today. So it should be Devon tomorrow, Cornwall on Friday and Wexford on Saturday?? Too big an ask really - but keep the slaves at it Nick.
Hope all kit working well - it’s warming up. Love and God Speed, A & d

MARINE TRACK UPDATE!

DEPARTURE 1ST AUGUST 2009 - DOVER

Sorry to hear about opinion on weather window NOT being large enough re-start in next few days - I foresee stiff breezes not gales from my reading of met maps - but they have more modelling kit and I know it was felt last night pattern could go one of 3 ways! Best wishes to all, nigel

July 8th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Well done Nick and lads, do not whatever happens give up, you must go back and make a second run at it asap. You have done a great job so far, all of you. Very unfortunate running into such a storm in the English Channel in the month of July. What happened was tough luck on you all, put it down to experience. Everyone is proud of your efforts to date, so never give up, after all you have put into it throughout 2009. You CAN do it and everyone is rooting for you. I have confidence in you all as a team. Love Papa (Nicks Grandad) All the best Nick, Will, David and Rob !
July 8th, 2009 at 6:30 am
Guys - when I heard what had happened down in Hastings, I must admit I wasn’t sure whether it was (a) bad luck; (b) you had encountered an over-zealous cautious coastguard; or (c) you weren’t as well-prepared as we all thought. Having experienced the extraordinary weather in Central London yesterday - and heard the news this morning in which they singled out “Hastings, where overt two months worth of rain fell in the day”, I know it wasn’t the latter two reasons!!! Best of luck with the restart - hope you have more luck next time. Simon
July 8th, 2009 at 6:03 am
Keep smiling and be positive. The weather is something we all find dificult at times.
How many times did Sir Edmund Hillary have to submit to the weather before he achieved his goal? Take heart from the great man who knew it is no good trying to beat the elements; but rather wait until conditions are right, then try again with all your might.
Good luck,
Mick Hutchings.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
You have done so well. The weather can only get better and we are sure you will be able to start again. We are routing for you. x x x
July 7th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
A great effort lads,do not get disheartened as this is just a setback. You got this far which is a considerable achievement. You can do it.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Guys - sorry to hear about the weather set-back. Hope you can get back out soon and get on with the job of breaking that record.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
as we said to u yesterday guys - you’ve done the hard bit in all the planning and showing the spirit to do this.
if it’s safe to do it again - go for it. if notr - don’t. Remember that the sea has always been greater than man - even four young men!
I did offer to ‘tow you in to our house in Eastbourne’. offer still stands.
Well Done!
July 7th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Mark, Suzie, just read the news report on the site about the weather and that the boys have had to give up - this is so awful I am really sorry for them, they must be so disappointed. I have only read it very quickly but understand they are going to have a second attempt very soon but what a misery for them. My very best wishes to all for the second go and sincerely hope that the weather holds this time.
Best wishes
Wendy

Wishing you lots of luck, guess you’ve been fighting against the wind all day. We live on Hastings seafront and you were just opposite our flat so we saw you moored up for the night. Hope the weather gets better for you.
July 6th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Hope you are ok after your very choppy night off of Hastings East Sussex. We saw the lifeboat come out to you but hope that it was just bringing supplies.

Sorry to see you’ve been pinned boys. Hope it’s not too choppy on the buoy. Fingers crossed the weather will clear. We were out rowing in 25 knot headwinds last week and learnt just how futile it can be. You’ll soon be back to record chasing though I’m sure
July 6th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Good luck to you all, just looked at your tracking thing and was disappointed not to actually see you on the satellite, but then I realised that would be stupid! Anyway good luck!!

If you can run 60 seconds distance run, you’ll be a man my son.
Clearly you are not running 60 seconds distance run, but in fact (insert number) miles.
I put forth the question, does this make you a man or machine?

Guys
Will

We’ll be back down in a few weeks, maybe see if we’re free for a day then for a go in a gig rower!
Thanks again, Nick
